Springbrook is the village to base yourself in and explore Springbrook National Park and Natural Bridge. Binna Burra or O'Reilly's are the places to stay to explore Lamington National Park.

Getting to Springbrook

Springbrook Plateau is about 100km south of Brisbane. From the Pacific Motorway, Springbrook Plateau is 29km from Mudgeeraba or 42km from Nerang. Exit the Pacific Motorway at Mudgeeraba and follow the Gold Coast-Springbrook Road.

Getting to Lamington National Park

Allow 70 minutes from Broadbeach. Drive 38km to Beechmont via Nerang. From the north, take Pacific Motorway exit 34 to Beenleigh, route 92 to Tamborine, and route 90 to Canungra then 18km to Beechmont.

Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Just behind the Sunshine Coast, in the scenic Blackall Range and Kondalilla National Park, a cool mountain retreat. The small villages of Montville, Maleny and Mapelton are all beautiful places to stay with a range of accommodation and dining options. Romantic escapes, weekend getaways, family holidays, the villages are perfect for everyone.

There are lovely walks in Kondilla National Park, these are easily accessible from the surrounding villages.

Montville is the closest to Kondalilla National Park, Maleny is about 12km south of Montville. Mapelton is about 10km north of Montville and also access the Mapelton Falls National Park.

Getting there

From Brisbane, travel 54km north along the Bruce Highway, then follow the scenic Glass House Mountains Road 22km north to the Landsborough turnoff. Drive on a further 10km to reach Maleny, then another 12km to Montville. From the north, travel to Nambour, then head 15km west to Mapleton. Continue 10km towards Montville to the park turnoff on the right or continue another 12 kms to Maleny.

Kondilla National Park - Walking Tracks
******************************************
Picnic Creek circuit — 2.4km (Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour) Class 2
This easy, relatively flat walk crosses Picnic Creek (400m from start), passes through tall eucalypt forest with patches of wet sclerophyll forest – a mix of eucalypt and rainforest species. Enjoy views over the valley from a lookout point.

Rock Pools walk — 3.2km return (Allow 1 hour) Class 3
The walk follows Picnic Creek circuit and a track that links the circuit with the Kondalilla Falls circuit. The rock pools are a feature above the waterfall on Skene Creek. View the rainforest valley below. Look for emergent bunya pines with their distinctive symmetrical dome shapes, dense stands of piccabeen palms and intriguing shapes of pink ash, Alphitonia petriei. The walk back up the hill includes over 100 stairs and requires a reasonable fitness level.

Kondalilla Falls circuit — 4.6km ( Allow 1.5–2 hours) Class 3
This track follows the Rock Pools walk to the top of Kondalilla Falls and then continues past the lookout, winding down through the rainforest to the base of the waterfall. Take the opportunity this track provides to explore the valley's features.

Just behind the Sunshine Coast, in the scenic Blackall Range, Kondalilla National Park is a cool mountain retreat. The park is named after the spectacular Kondalilla Falls, where Skene Creek drops 90m into a rainforest valley. Kondalilla Falls got its name from an Aboriginal word meaning “rushing waters”, a good description of this waterfall during the summer wet season.

Above the falls, tall open eucalypt forest mingles with rainforest species in wetter areas. A drier forest grows on the western escarpment, featuring casuarinas with a grass tree understorey. Subtropical rainforest grows below the escarpment, where soil and aspect is suitable, and riparian rainforest lines the creek.

Surrounded by farms and towns, this park is an important refuge for many animals and plants including the rare pouched frog, Assa darlingtoni and the bopple nut, Macadamia ternifolia, which is vulnerable to extinction. More than 107 species of birds have been seen in the park, and 70 species of reptiles and 32 species of frogs have been recorded from the Blackall Range and nearby Conondale Range.

Getting there
From Brisbane: Drive 54km north along the Bruce Highway, then follow the scenic Glass House Mountains Road 22km north to the Landsborough turnoff. Drive a further 20km to arrive in Montville.
From the north: Drive to Nambour, then head 15km west to Mapleton. Continue 10km towards Montville to the park turnoff on the right.

Purling Brook Falls and Gwongorella Picnic Area
There is the option of a 4 or 6km walk in this area, or you could just stroll 300 metres to the lookout.

Purling Brook Falls Circuit (4kms return, 2-3 hrs)
Note: It is easier to walk the track in a clockwise direction. If including the Warringa pool track, which leads downstream from the base of the falls, add another 2 kms and 40 minutes.

Walkers pass through an open eucalypt forest, descending into the gorge to view the falls from below. A steady climb through the forest brings the walker to the picnic area.

Purling Brook Falls Viewpoint (300m)
To see the Purling Brook falls from the top is a 300m walk from the carpark to the viewpoint.

Twin Falls Circuit (4kms return, 1.5-2 hrs)
Commence this walk from Tallanbana Picnic Area or Canyon Lookout. Follow the track in an anti-clockwise direction to take advantage of the interpretive signs, which guide the walker through the different forest types. Pass behind two waterfalls, through the rock clefts and among palms and tree ferns.

Warrie Circuit (17kms return, 5-6hrs)
Commence at Canyon Lookout. The longest and most interesting track on the plateau follows the base of the canyon cliffs to Goomoolahra Falls before descending into the mossy green depths of the rainforest. Several creeks and gullies are encountered and the Aboriginal word Warrie which means ‘rushing water’ is given credence. The track reaches the Meeting of the Waters where all watercourses draining the canyon meet, then climbs up the western side of the gorge.

Take a backpack with food and drink, first aid, camera and binoculars for a memorable day. Average fitness is requires.

Wunburra Lookout (30m return)
Located just off the Gold Coast Springbrook road, Wunburra Lookout has views of Purling Brook Gorge, Mount Cougal and the Little Nerang Dam. The carpark is small and can be crowded on weekends and public holidays. Take care with children, as the busy road is close by. Views from this lookout highlight the geological processes of erosion.

Canyon Lookout (30m return)
Step out of your vehicle and you are there! Take in the suberb views of Twin and Rainbow Falls, the sheer walls of the canyon and the ocean beyond. The spectacular views from Canyon Lookout are a result of millions of years of erosion, landslides and weathering. This is the starting point of the Twin Falls and Warrie Circuits.

Best of All Lookout (600m return, 30mins)
The name of this lookout speaks for itself and is absolutely correct, this really is the best view in Springbrook, right at the end of the road, it is worth the extra drive!
Walk through the ancient Antartic beech forest to a view of Northern New South Wales dominated by Mt Warning – the lava plug centre of the erosion caldera of the extinct Tweed Shield Volcano.

Natural Bridge
Deep in the Numinbah Valley, the lush subtropical rainforest does not immediately disclose the arched cave, rock bridge and plunging waterfall for which the area has become famous. A display stand at the track entrance has maps and information about the park and its wildlife.
Swimming is not encouraged at Natural Bridge to protect its sensitive ecosystem. Nearby Bochow Park and Numinbah Forest are perfect for picnicking. Both feature a creek and are popular swimming spots in summer.

Natural Bridge Circuit (1km return with a long set of stairs, 1hr)
Note: Due to a long set of stairs it is easier to walk this track in a clockwise direction.
A sealed track takes the visitor through the forest, across Cave Creek and into the arched cave to witness the waterfall plunging from above. At night the cave is illuminated by thousands of ‘glow worms’ tiny green lights. They can be seen year round but glow brightest in summer.

Mount Cougal section
This part of Springbrook National Park is accessed from an entirely different road and has no accommodation, this really is a half or full day trip from the Gold Coast.

At the end of Currumbin Valley road, 6kms past Currumbin Rock pools, the twin peaks of Mount Cougal give this area its name. Cascades are a scenic park feature, but do not take risks with them! Several people have died or suffered spinal cord injuries after jumping or diving into the creek.

Cascades Track (1.6km return 1hr)
Walk through the subtropical rainforest beside Currumbin Creek to viewing platforms overlooking the cascades. Follow self guiding signs to the historic sawmill and discover the parks past. The 800m bitumen path has a gradual uphill rise and is suitable for prams and assisted wheelchair access.

Springbrook

Dominating the skyline west of the Gold Coast, Springbrook Plateau’s cool rainforests, fresh mountain streams, eucalypt forests and montane health offer the visitor a contrast to the urbanised lowlands. View impressive landscapes and walk in sub tropical, warm and cool temperate rainforest, open eucalypt rainforest and montane heath. Explore these forest habitats and encounter the diverse wildlife – some are rare, endangered and primitive species.

The 3425ha Springbrook National Park comprises three reserves on and around the plateau: Springbrook Plateau section which extends along the crest of the plateau, Mount Cougal section to the Eat and Natural Bridge section to the West. The National Park preserves rainforest and eucalypt forests in cliff-lined headwaters of rivers and creek flowing into the Gold Coast.

In December 1994, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially declared the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves Australia (CERRA) World Heritage Area over the Scenic Rim (including Springbrook and Lamington National Parks and most of the Main Range and Mount Barney National Parks) and the rainforests of New South Wales.

Springbrook is only 30 minutes drive from the Gold Coast and 90 minutes drive from Brisbane.
